RIA Novosti announced that, on February 20, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that hockey matches involving President Vladimir Putin still require restraint from both sides.
It is known that President Putin started playing ice hockey when he was 50. Thanks to former sports minister Viacheslav Fetisov, he was influenced by sport. He played hockey in public last year. Last Christmas, Putin also played a fun match on Red Square, just outside the Kremlin, winning with his teammates.
“Yes, that’s completely natural. Hockey players in the game, in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, are trying not to harm each other and the head of state, and that is absolutely natural when both players are involved. “Don’t want to get hurt,” Peskov told reporters as he asked if the hockey players were really playing with Putin.
Mr. Peskov added that Putin’s last game of hockey was on February 7 in a friendly match in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi. Meanwhile, Putin and Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko were playing for the same squad.
Hockey is Russia’s second most common sport after soccer, and is also a strong Russian sport at international competitions. At the 2018 Winter Olympics, the Russian team captured the Gold Medal after convincing Germany in the finals.
The night hockey tournament has been organized since December 2011 on the initiative of Putin himself. The goal of the tournament is to involve the elders by arranging evening tournaments that will encourage them to play after work and create an amateur hockey community that links all regions of the world.
President Putin is considered to be a sports fan. In addition to horseback riding, he has consistently shown his ability to play sports by Judo, Taekwondo, F1 cycling, or swimming under the Black Sea.
