So You Want To Be A Musician (Are You Fucking Nuts!) Introduction

So, you want to be a musician? Are you fucking nuts?

An introduction to the Dark Side

I intended to release the many chapters that have been created for this book a year or so ago, but like most things in life something comes along that screws the plans up. In my case it was ill health and multiple hospital visits. You, however, do not need to know this. That is not what you are spending your time reading this for.

First of all let me introduce myself. I am Rick Palin, CEO of Skyfire Promotions Ltd in the UK which is a set of companies designed to help emerging artists in the music scene (in particular rock and blues) get out there and get their music heard. The organisation comprises of three different companies; Skyfire Interactive, a music PR and distribution company, Firebrand Radio ( does exactly what it says on the tin) and lastly Frame Music, a reviews webzine and magazine. All three components operate under the control of Skyfire Promotions Ltd.

What we will be discussing in the many chapters to come are the numerous pitfalls (and how to avoid them) of being in the music industry.

First off let me start by asking a question. You have just got your first shiny CD in its posh digipack or jewel case… do you expect the world to come to you now? If the answer to this is yes then please stop reading this book as you clearly have everything under control, know exactly what you are doing, and you already know everything about the music industry, so this book is clearly not for you and apologies for wasting your time. If, however, your answer is a big fat NO, then my readers we have a lot to discuss over the next few chapters so strap yourself in and get ready for the ride.
Secondly, my door is always open if you want a chat on any subject in this book. Please feel free to email me on rick@skyfireinteractive.co.uk

Your Band, Your Business

There is one phrase that you will see repeated over and over in this book. I make no apologies for repeating it as often as I possibly can… Your Band Is Your BUSINESS, so treat it as such.
What I mean by that statement is the world of music these days is a very competitive environment where bands fall by the wayside because they have not got the infrastructure to cope with the many demands placed on them to help them succeed, which, in turn leads to in band fighting and eventually splitting up. I hope by reading this book you will gain some thought provoking advice that will assist in helping get your band from zero to hero with as little grief as possible. Some segments of this book may seem blatantly obvious to you, but to others it may be that inspirational spark that gives you a new idea and enables you to head down a bold new path you may have never thought of before.
